THE UK is set to return to a tiered coronavirus alert system when the current national lockdown ends on December 2.

However, the government has not yet revealed which areas will be in which tiers.

Matt Hancock is set to announce this in a "Covid-19 Update Statement" to be read in the House of Commons from 11.15am.

The government website states: "On Thursday, November 26, the government will announce which areas are in which tier.

"You will be able to use the postcode checker (on the government website) to find out the restrictions in your area or an area you plan to visit.

"The NHS Covid-19 app will be updated on December 2."

The nation will be split into three tiers:

  • Tier 1: Medium risk
  • Tier 2: High risk
  • Tier 3: Very high risk

The tier each area is placed in will depend on a range of factors, including the case detection rates, case detection rates in over 60s, whether the rate of infection is rising or falling, the current and potential pressure on the NHS, and the positivity rate - the number of positive Covid-19 tests as a proportion of the number of tests being carried out.

The government has said it will make the decision based on recommendations to ministers from regional and national public health experts, the Telegraph reported.

The three-tier system was introduced on October 12, aiming to standardise and simplify the restrictions in place across the UK following a spate of local lockdowns.

The majority of England was placed in Tier 1, facing the lowest level of restrictions, up until the second national lockdown was introduced on November 5 in an attempt to curb the UK's growing infection rate.

Speaking on Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that more areas of the UK will now be placed in Tier 2 and Tier 3 when the tiered system returns next week.

And the restrictions faced in each tier will now be strengthened.

A government spokesman said:  "It is right to apply tighter restrictions where prevalence is highest.

"In September and October, the virus spread rapidly in all parts of the country.

"The government responded with new national restrictions. These have brought transmission back under control.

"The government will replace them on December 2 with a regionally-differentiated approach, where different tiers of restrictions apply in different parts of the country.

"These tiers will be strengthened compared to the previous tiers in order to prevent a return to growing infections.

"We know that social contact spreads the virus. We need to impose these restrictions and it is right to target the toughest measures only in the areas where the virus is most prevalent or where we are seeing sharper increases in the rate of infection.

"The government is committed to ensuring the right levels of intervention in the right places to manage outbreaks, suppress the virus and keep R below one."
