THE number of recorded coronavirus cases in Brighton and Hove increased by 22 over the last 24 hours.

Public Health England figures show that 13,534 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday in the city - up from 13,512 the same time on Monday.

The rate of infection in the area now stands at 4,653 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 6,183.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 12,364 over the period, to 3,972,148.

Brighton and Hove's cases were among the 498,782 recorded across the South East, a figure which rose by 1,336 over the period.

It comes after five people in Sussex died from Covid-19 on Monday.

Three coronavirus deaths were recorded at Western Sussex Hospitals Trust, while two died in hospital at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

In East Sussex, 73 people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

Figures show that 29,028 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am on Tuesday - a rise from 28,955 the same time on Monday.

The rate of infection in East Sussex now stands at 5,209 cases per 100,000 people, while the area's cases were among the 498,782 recorded across the South East.

In West Sussex, 125 people tested positive for Covid-19.

A total of 38,066 people have been confirmed as testing positive in the area. That number rose from 37,941 the same time on Monday.
