A PLAN to allow rubbish lorries to enter the tip early in the morning to beat traffic is one of the most controversial proposals of the last six months.
Queues are said to have become more common the Old Shoreham Road since the introduction of a cycle lane last May and this has had an impact on Hove Recycling Centre.
As a result, site operator Veolia applied – successfully – to use the tip from an hour earlier at 7am.
The Argus has trawled through more than 1,800 planning applications made to Brighton and Hove City Council over the last half a year.
By comparing the number of objections from the community, we can reveal these plans were the eighth most controversial.
Residents argued they already have to suffer from excessive noise, with one person living nearby complaining of “a bang so loud I thought it was an explosion”.
Objecting through the council’s online planning portal, one said: “We are often disturbed by noise from the vehicles and machinery on the site - sometimes horrendous bangs vibrate through the ground.
“There is already a massive traffic congestion, safety, and air pollution problem at the Old Shoreham Road entrance. The appalling air pollution is genuinely choking.
“The frequent hooting and loud exchange of expletives between drivers is not a pleasant experience.”
Another said: “I strongly object to the proposal to allow the site to be open any longer than it is currently.
“During the summer there was a bang so loud I thought it was an explosion. I am still unsure if it was an explosion or a container being dropped. I can provide dates and times for the above instances if required.”
