A FAMILY run takeaway kebab shop has won a prestigious national award for customer satisfaction.

Bursa Kebab, which is in Newhaven High Street, won the customer satisfaction award at The British Kebab Awards in London after being narrowed to one of ten finalists from across the country.

Brothers Mark and Deniz Bursa, who took the shop over from their father, went up to London with some of their staff and said they are “overwhelmed” but “immensely proud” of their achievement.

The event was judged by the likes of LBC presenter James O’Brien, executive chefs, and MPs from across the country, including Brighton’s very own Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Kemptown.

The voting process started with communities across the country nominating their favourite kebab shop. This eventually led to shortlists being drawn up for a variety of awards, from chef of the year to best value restaurant.

Mark thanked the “big-hearted community” in Newhaven around him.

He said: “Our loyal customers, we can’t thank enough. Without them we wouldn’t have reached this stage in the first place.

“We are immensely proud of where we are today and what we have achieved. The business would have never got to where it is today without the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm of the team.

“We are honoured to serve this community.”

“I would like to give my thanksgiving to the organisers as well from The British Kebab Awards. I would like to thank them for the recognition they have given to the industry itself which is overwhelming.

“We are overwhelmed, not just to be in the top ten, but to win this award. Going forward, we like to be humble and we like to be second to none.

Mark dedicated Bursa Kebab’s award to two fishermen who died last year at sea off the coast of Newhaven.

He said: “We thank our local MPs and councillors, our local traders, our small but big-hearted community, our customers for the support and belief. Like I said, we couldn’t have come this far without them.

“We would like to dedicate this award for our local fishermen. As you know, Newhaven is a fishing town.

“Last year in November, we had a really horrible incident where we sadly lost two of our fishermen, Robert Morley and Adam Harper. So we would like to dedicate this award to them and their families.”
