THIS is the moment emergency services moved in to extinguish a bin lorry fire on a residential street.

Crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service rushed to tackle the blaze, urging motorists to avoid the scene in Christchurch Road at 8.52am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two high-pressure hose reels and a jet to extinguish the fire.

A video taken from the scene showed a mound of rubbish alight in the middle of the street, while firefighters got to work.

Recent pictures taken from the scene showed the aftermath of the fire, with staff working to remove the rubbish pile from the road.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 8.52am to reports of a fire involving a refuse collection vehicle on Christchurch Road in Worthing.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised two fire engines from Worthing Fire Station to the scene.

“Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked with the bin men to remove the waste from the vehicle, allowing them to bring the fire under control, and to prevent it spreading further or causing damage to the vehicle.

“They used two high pressure hose reels and a jet to extinguish the fire and remained on scene damping down the waste to ensure there were no further hotspots, then assisted with the removal of the waste.

“Fortunately there were no casualties as a result of this incident. The last crew left the scene at 10.34am.”
