A DRIVER was seriously injured after crashing their car into a river.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on the A272 in Midhurst at 10.20am on Monday, March 21.

A car left North Street and crashed into a nearby river, according to South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in a serious condition.

The passenger, the only other occupant of the car, was assessed and treated for injuries at the scene before being discharged.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Emergency services were called to reports of a single-vehicle collision on the A272 in Midhurst at 10.20am on Monday (March 21). The driver was taken to hospital in Brighton by the ambulance after suffering serious injuries.

"A passenger, the only other occupant of the car, was not injured. The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene".

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "I can confirm we were called at approximately 10.20am today (March 21) to North Street, Midhurst, to reports a car had left the road and entered the river.

"Ambulance crews attended the scene and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service. Emergency services worked together at the scene to rescue two people.

"One person was airlifted to Royal Sussex County Hospital in a serious condition and the second person was assessed and treated before being discharged at the scene.”
