AN EVICTED beach hut owner facing legal action after saying she would build a hut “anyway” is holding a protest against the council.

Michele Spicer, from Worthing, was the first person evicted from a beach hut in 25 years by Worthing Borough Council after she got into a parking row with people who lived nearby.

The former teacher had her licence terminated in June last year before being evicted in September for “nuisance, aggressive behaviour, swearing and playing excessively loud music in her car”.

She vowed to build a new one on plot 239 at Goring seafront, near Worthing, but has since been told by the council that doing so will force it to take legal action against her.

The council told The Argus it was “considering its options” and in a letter to Michele’s contractor it said not giving an “unequivocal statement or agreement that you will not site a new beach hut on the former site of beach hut” means legal action is being considered.

A letter to Michele also said she has demonstrated “every intention of committing an act of trespass”. The letter added that the council is “now having to seriously consider resorting to legal action” which could include an injunction.

Michele said she is going to invite people for a protest tomorrow.

She said: “I’m going to do a protest on Sunday, I have asked all the bin men to come and join me because they support me on my catwalk every morning. I wave to them every day. I’m getting all my homeless people to come and help. A lot of people will turn up.

“I’m going to make banners. It’s going to be a real fun event, it’s about justice for the vulnerable.

“I’m going to build it anyway, this is just a bit of fun to shove the dirt in their face.”

A spokeswoman for Worthing Borough Council said: “We have been in contact with Mrs Spicer and her contractor to remind them that a licence is required to site a beach hut on council-owned land.

“We are exploring a range of options to resolve this matter.”
