TWO police officers are among those injured in a five-vehicle crash during a pursuit.

All three lanes of the M23 were closed northbound following the crash between Junction 10 A264 Copthorne Way (Crawley) and the M25 interchange.

Police said officers responded to an Automated Number Plate Recognition hit northbound on the A23 in Patcham just after 11.05am on Saturday, March 26.

Officers pursued the vehicle, a black Audi, which was travelling at an excessive speed, according to police.

Five vehicles were then involved in a crash on the M23, including two police cars.

“So far there are three people, including two police officers, who have sustained injuries,” a police spokeswoman said.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

“All three lanes near to junction nine of the northbound side are closed and it is not yet clear when the road will fully reopen,” the spokeswoman added.

In a statement, National Highways South-East previously said emergency services are working at the scene with Sussex Police, who are leading the response.

“The M23 is closed northbound between J10 (Crawley) and J8 (M25) following a multiple vehicle collision,” a spokesman said.

“Please allow extra time for your journey and seek an alternative route if possible.”
