A MAN who pleaded guilty to riding an e-scooter without insurance and while disqualified from driving was unaware he was not entitled to use the device, a court heard.
Brighton magistrates were told Mateusz Cieslak, 34, of Richmond Place, Brighton, thought the legal requirements for e-scooters were similar to that for bicycles.
Andy Foreman, defending, told the court "many people" would be unaware of the legalities around riding e-scooters on the road.
"There is no mens rea [intention] in these cases," said Mr Foreman.
Lauren Kenny, prosecuting, said police stopped Cieslak in Cuckmere Way, Brighton, in November last year.
Cieslak was granted unconditional bail and magistrates asked the probation service to prepare a report ahead of sentencing on June 1.
