A WITNESS heard someone shouting “stop, stop” before a person was hit by a van this morning.

The accident happened around 11am in Gloucester Road, Brighton, near the junction of Tidy Street.

Sussex Police closed part of the road and put up police tape. There were clothes strewn on the floor, some with blood on them.

One passerby heard shouting as the van apparently struck the person in Gloucester Road.

He said: “I heard somebody shout ‘stop, stop, stop!’ and heard what sounded like banging on the side of the van.

“I assume somebody got knocked over but it all happened so quickly.

“People very quickly ran over and I didn’t want to see what had happened. Enough people were there with their phones calling for assistance.

“I didn’t want to see something horrible. There were plenty of people there taking care on the scene.

“The police took around 20 minutes to arrive, the ambulance took even longer.”

Traffic is coping well in the area but people are being advised to avoid the North Laine area.

Sussex Police have confirmed a woman in her 80s is in hospital with serious injuries.
