A GROUP of children were rescued from the sea by members of the public before being treated in hospital after swallowing large amounts of water.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Saltdean on Sunday, July 3.

Newhaven Coastguard said their team arrived to find that several children had been rescued from the sea by members of the public.

The children received medical attention and were taken to hospital, a Newhaven Coastguard spokesman said.

“The team was tasked to several children that had been rescued from the sea by members of the public at Saltdean,” he said.

“Due to the dangers of swallowing large amounts of salt water, the team provided necessary first aid and casualty monitoring, prior to transfer to the ambulance service.”

Meanwhile, Newhaven Coastguard were also called to attend a multi-agency search for a missing person from Denton Island on Friday, July 1.

“An extensive search of Newhaven was undertaken, as well as to the north on the River Ouse,” a spokesman said.

“The teams were stood down when CCTV footage emerged of the person catching a train out of the area.

“The person was located safe and well the following day, out of area.”

Last month, two people taking part in a charity hike at the Seven Sisters Country Park had to be rescued by the coastguard.

Newhaven Coastguard said both walkers were taken to hospital – one by an air ambulance and the other by a coastguard rescue helicopter.
