Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly hit on the head with a glass bottle in a busy high street.

The assault happened just before 2pm yesterday in Montague Street, Worthing, just outside Marks and Spencer supermarket.

Officers could be seen in the high street clearing up blood from the floor.

A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his head and ear which are “not thought to be life threatening or life changing”.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody.

Police believe the two men are known to each other.

Sussex Police believe it to be an isolated incident but said people can expect to heightened police presence in the area.

A spokesman said: “Anyone with information which could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to police online or call 101 quoting serial number 582 of 22/10.

“Police would like to thank members of the public who were in the area at the time of the incident and assisted officers with their investigation."

It comes after an alleged stabbing at The Level in Brighton on Friday.
