Lidl has told residents about its plans to open a new out-of-town supermarket near the A27.

The budget supermarket intends to take over two stores at the Downlands Retail Park at Lyons Farm, Worthing, and is asking people for their views.

The unit, which previously housed Halfords and Bensons for Beds, could create 40 jobs.

In its letter to residents, James Mitchell, regional head of property at Lidl, wrote: “Presently, the park suffers from a vacant unit following Halfords closing and Bensons for Beds going into administration.

“Lidl’s proposals would improve these units through a sympathetic and sustainable refurbishment of an otherwise unused space.

“These proposals would provide fresh choice for shoppers on an established retail site whilst providing up to 40 new local jobs.”

Under the proposals, the new food store would include Lidl’s popular bakery as well as new widened parking spaces and cycle parking. Lidl said the renovation would be "in a sustainable manner".

The renovations would not affect the B&Q and Currys stores in the retail park.

Lidl is the latest in a number of chains to propose new stores at the Downlands Retail Park. A planning application for a new drive-through Costa Coffee has recently been approved for the site.

Plans are yet to be submitted to Adur and Worthing Council as Lidl is currently completing its consultation process with residents.

Recipients of the letter can send their comments in the post to Lidl ahead of the planning application which is expected to be submitted in the near future.

Lidl has been approached for comment.
