National Highways has confirmed that a road was gritted before a fatal crash and other accidents in freezing conditions this week.

A Porsche driver was fatally injured when his car crashed into a parked police car which was assisting another vehicle on the A27 on Monday.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that the driver was a 31-year-old-man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on the eastbound carriageway between Fontwell and Arundel.

National Highways said the A27 was scheduled to be gritted at 2pm and 1am on Monday, and 3pm and 3am on Tuesday. All of these gritting treatments were carried out.

A spokeswoman for National Highways said: "Each gritting treatment lasts for a period of 12 hours, so second treatments are carried out to ensure road surface has sufficient treatment to last for the duration that the weather is likely to impact."
