More than 1,000 homes are without power after reports of an electrical fire at a substation.
Firefighters attended an "electricity box on fire" in St John's Road, Eastbourne, this morning at around 7.15am.
The road was closed for two hours while crews put out the fire.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said there has been a power outage because of the fire.
UK Power Networks' website states that 1,081 homes in Eastbourne are without power and will be so until around 3.30pm this afternoon.
It said: "Due to a faulty piece of high voltage network equipment we've had to turn off your power."
The website says the power should return between 3.30pm and 4.30pm this afternoon.
A fire service spokeswoman said: "Two breathing apparatus wearers used one in seven foam to extinguish the fire.
"There are no reports of casualties. The cause of the fire will be investigated."
The road has since reopened.
