Mods have descended on the city for a weekend meet up in aid of charity.

Hundreds of scooters parked up outside Volks on Madeira Terrace to celebrate Easter in Brighton and Hove.

The weekend, which also involved the group delivering Easter eggs to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, comes with Brighton being the "Mecca for Mods" due to the cultural links to the city.

Jon Thompsett, 58, from Seaford, said: “It’s a fantastic weekend, its really fun to see all the scooters.

“I’ve been coming to these for over 10 years and I bought my scooter off an original Mod. You come down and you meet different people each time.

“We used to have a big club in the 80s and its nice to see a lot of us still coming down.”

The Mods Aid weekender includes a scooter owned by The Who frontman Roger Daltrey which was recently restored.

The scooter formed part a procession of the scooters from Volks to Concorde 2 on Madeira Terrace.

Aaron White, who gave the Vespa scooter a new lease of life and rode it in the procession, said: “Today has been crazy. We started at the alley this morning and we’ve already raised about £300 for charity.

“Brighton is where this all came from, it’s the Mecca of Mods. The bike is home.

“This is the first time we’ve done Mods Aid so to get so many people down is amazing.”

The mods have been a feature of Brighton's motoring culture for the last 60 years, scootering around Brighton and Hove in their Vespas and Lambrettas.

Cult film Quadrophenia was filmed in and around the city in 1979, depicting the clashes between the mods and rockers on August bank holidays.

The Mods Aid Weekender raises money for Sussex Homeless Support as well as the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which Roger Daltrey keenly supports.

Jim Deans, who organised the event, said: “It’s brilliant and has turned out amazing.

“This is what Brighton is about and what it should be like and we get to celebrate Mod culture like this for the first time.”
