Passengers are facing "chaos" at Gatwick Airport with long queues at passport controls.

The issue is believed to be caused by e-passport gates which have gone down across the country.

The system went down last night, the Home Office said.

One passenger at Gatwick said it was "absolute chaos" and pictures showed long queues at around 3.30am today.

This weekend is a bank holiday and also the beginning of half term for many schools in the county, so passenger numbers are already higher than normal.

Writing on Twitter, another disgruntled Gatwick passenger said: "The e-gates have not been on since yesterday late evening if not earlier.

"Surely something could be done in that time."

On Twitter, Gatwick Airport has responded to complaints with the statement: "We sympathize with your frustrations, Border Force are responsible for this area of the airport."
