Four Brighton bakeries have been named among the best in the country in a national newspaper.

The Times compiled its list of the top 49 bakeries to visit in the UK with the help of chefs and bakers from across the country.

Four bakeries in Brighton, including one chain with branches in Worthing too, were selected for being so delicious that “food lovers queues for them”, the Times said.

They were chosen by Isaac Bartlett-Copeland, the co-founder of Embers restaurant in Meeting House Lane, Brighton, which opened earlier this year.

His picks all ranked in the top 20.

These are the Brighton bakeries Isaac recommends you visit:

1. Sugardough Bakery, Brighton and Hove branches

Sugardough is an “old-school” bakery which only uses traditional techniques for its breads and cakes.

Isaac says it is a “real labour of love” for owner and baker, Kane McDowell.

He also points out the “fantastic attention to detail” and great quality ingredients.

2. The Flour Pot Bakery, Brighton, Hove and Worthing

The Flour Pot began in Brighton’s North Laine with its first branch in Sydney Street.

Now there are ten spread across Brighton, Worthing and Hove, but, Isaac says, they haven’t lost their charm.

The bakery offers a wide range of sweet treats and an “ever-changing” selection of breads, so you will want to keep coming back.

3. Julien Plumart, Brighton

This patisserie has a prime location in Queens Road, Brighton, meaning tourists arriving at the station are just a stone’s throw from “irresistible” treats.

With perfect macarons and “delicious” cruffins (croissant-muffin hybrids), there is something for everyone.

All their products look beautiful and taste just as good, said Issac.

4. Real Patisserie, Brighton, Hove and Worthing

Real Patisserie began in Trafalgar Street, Brighton, more than 25 years ago.

With four shops, it is now a Sussex staple, which is known for its artisan breads and miniature tarts.

It also caters to events and offers wholesale options making it a great option for special occasions.
