A councillor has said that residents can “all help” to combat loneliness this Christmas by checking in on friends and neighbours.

Brighton and Hove City Councillor Bruno de Oliveira has called for residents to help tackle loneliness with many feeling “increasingly disconnected” over Christmas.

The call to arms comes as the council also highlighted community activities in the city in an attempt to help those who need extra support in the festive season.

Cllr De Oliveira, chairman of the health and wellbeing board, said: “As the festive season begins, many people feel increasingly disconnected, and loneliness poses a real threat to mental health. Images of togetherness and family are everywhere, and it can be a very hard time of year for those that are lonely.

“Social activities, support groups, and community services are vital for those experiencing loneliness and communities play a pivotal role. By helping to connect people with local resources we can address social, emotional, and psychological needs.

“We can all help, check in with friends, family, neighbours - arrange to meet up, pop round, give them a call, send them a message, or share something with them on social media.”
