The Royal Pavilion and its gardens will be closed later this month when a Hollywood studio comes to film a TV drama.

Residents who live close to the historic palace have received two letters informing them that production of a “returning TV drama” will be taking place on February 19.

The second letter, which an Argus reader said arrived through letterboxes yesterday, provided greater detail about planned disruption due to the production.

Filming is expected to take place between 1pm and 2am, with Palace Place being closed for several days in the run-up to the production to make way for a lighting crane.

Several parts of the city centre will have their parking bays suspended to make way for technical parking:

  • Church Street: February 15, 12.01am - February 21, 8pm
  • Gloucester Place: February 18, 12.01am - February 20, 11.59pm
  • Jubilee Street: February 18, 12.01am - February 20, 11.59pm
  • Jubilee Square: February 16, 7am - February 20, 11.59pm
  • Kingswood Street: February 18, 12.01am - February 20, 1pm
  • William Street: February 18, 12.01am - February 20, 1pm

The name of the drama has not been revealed but is codenamed “Essex 2” in correspondence to residents.

The letters reference Gate 4 Productions Ltd, understood to be linked to Hollywood studio Warner Brothers, with an address at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

The latest letter received by residents, signed by two location managers at Warner Brothers, said: “We understand that we will be guests in the area and, as such, we will strive to keep any potential disturbance to your day to the least possible.

“Filming cannot take place without the goodwill of local residents and we would like to thank you for your patience and kindness in advance. We are very much looking forward to filming with you in Brighton.”

Brighton and Hove Museums, the trust that operates the Royal Pavilion, confirmed that the palace and “areas of the garden” will be closed to the public while filming takes place, but were unable to confirm which drama is being filmed.

Brighton has been the location for many TV and film productions over the years, including hit ITV crime drama Grace.
