A community is thrilled after plans for a new street food market in the city have been given the go-ahead.

Brighton and Hove City Council approved the proposals on Tuesday for a former car rental facility in Trafalgar Street, Brighton to be converted into a new social club run by Beak Brewery.

The venue will have three pop-up kitchens, hired by independent businesses from across the county, as well as a bar area and indoor seating.

The venue will be open seven days a week including bank holidays.

Since the plans were approved, residents have shown their excitement at the concept of this new market space.

Brighton resident Fred Corneby said: "Finally. Places like this are in countries across Europe and are great places to accommodate different tastes under one roof."

Ian Rush said: "Excellent, after my reasonable suspicions, I was politely told how this enterprise was going to function, local produce/ale and all within lovely Sussex.

"Great news and am sure it will be a resounding success!"

Beak Brewery also received plenty of support from people across Brighton during the planning process, despite some residents objecting to the plans over noise concerns.

In total, 40 people sent statements in favour of the application to the council.

One resident said: "Absolutely support this venture.

"Beak Market would be an outstanding addition to the area and I believe it will be a huge success where it is.

"It will be an improvement, an attraction, a community asset creating opportunities for local businesses. Brilliant idea, usage and design.

"Beak have proved they can do it. And other ventures like Shelter Hall have proved that this sort of thing works. This is what Brighton's about."

Another person said: "This would be a fantastic addition to our city.

"Not only does Beak produce world-class beers, which would be available here, but this proposal also makes excellent use of a disused warehouse and will offer a brilliant space for the community (as well as visitors to our city) to gather with amazing street food, coffee and natural wine as well as the world-class beer."

A resident who lives in the city said: "As a member of the Brighton community, I wholeheartedly support the proposed street food market.

"Our city's culinary scene is diverse and vibrant, yet a dedicated space for street food has been notably absent.

"Similar markets have thrived in other UK cities, fostering a sense of community and providing a platform for local businesses to shine. Bringing such an initiative to Brighton would not only enrich our cultural fabric but also invigorate our local economy."

Another person who wrote to the council about the plans said: "This would be an incredible addition to the area and an ideal use for this space.

"It is in keeping with the independent feel of the North Laine area and provides a much-needed outlet in Brighton for small producers."

It is not yet known when work on the site will begin to bring the concept of the food market to life.
