Graham Potter has explained why Jason Steele is the ideal back-up goalkeeper.

The former Sunderland man has remained Potter’s man on the bench, while Maty Ryan and Robert Sanchez swap places either side of him in the pecking order.

Although Steele is not being given the nod in the Premier League, Potter says he is playing a big role in a time of change between the sticks.

Asked why Steele has been so valuable, Potter told The Argus: “I think his role around the club, his role in the dressing room, his role with the boys has been brilliant.

“I’ve got to say that he is very supportive of them, he has been really supportive of Rob.

“He puts his own personal ambition to one side for the team which is not so easy to do and is actually quite rare.

“I have the utmost respect for Jason in that regard.
