There is work to do yet but Albion fans can feel a lot more comfortable tonight - after their side turned on the style.

The Seagulls are six points clear of the drop zone thanks to a 3-0 win at home to Newcastle.

Carbon copy curlers from Leandro Trossard and Danny Welbeck put them in charge.

Then Neal Maupay’s expert finish on the volley rounded off a sumptuous passing move.

Albion outclassed Newcastle, simple as that, and have piled pressure on their rivals.

That is six points over the last two weekends for the Seagulls compared to one for Newcastle and none for Fulham.

As when they met at St James’ Park, the football played by these sides looked years apart. From different eras.

BISSOUMA DISTRAUGHT AFTER TOON INJURY

Yes, it might have been different had a Ryan Fraser curler early in the second half with the score at 1-0 gone in rather than hit the far post.

But Albion’s control apart from that was total.

It rewarded another shrewd tactical decision by Graham Potter.

He used Pascal Gross and Jakub Moder as wing-backs.

But forwards Maupay and Welbeck pulled very wide, giving room for Gross and Moder - on his first Prem start - to underlap.

Meanwhile Trossard worked his trickery in the middle.

It was all very clever and the players made it work like a dream.

Albion’s job is not done yet. There are still games to play.

We have seen a few times in their Premier League years how a seemingly safe position can quickly become more precarious.

Not least in the last few weeks.

BRUCE SHOCKED BY ALBION SUPREMACY

But six points against the Magpies this season will stand them in good stead.

Last time one team did the double in these fixtures was when Albion and Toon were chasing promotion from the Championship in 2016-17.

They both went up but ultimately those two results won and lost the title for the two teams involved.

With Newcastle finishing on top.

Could the two games this season have even bigger implications in the battle to preserve that Prem status secured four years ago?
