Gareth Southgate has hailed England’s winning start to Euro 2020 as a squad effort.

The Three Lions are up and running with a 1-0 success over Croatia at Wembley to kick off Group D.

Albion defender Ben White remained an unused substitute as Raheem Sterling’s 57th-minute goal gave England the points.

White played in two friendlies and has been a full part of preparations for the tournament.

Southgate was keen to highlight the efforts of his 26-man squad.

The England boss said: “I couldn’t be happier with not just the players who played but the players who came in and the way the whole group reacted across the last fortnight to prepare for this game.

“I’m most pleased with the performance. Of course the win is important.

“To win your first game relieves some tension.

“It doesn’t mean we’ve qualified. The objective is still to qualify from the group.

“But the performance was really good.”

Albion forward Leandro Trossard was also an unused substitute as Belgium beat Russia 3-0 on Saturday.

Jakub Moder hopes for playing time for Poland against neighbours Slovakia in St Petersburg today (5pm, ITV).

ALBION NEED GOOD NEWS FROM BORIS JOHNSON

Opinion seems divided as to whether he will start.

He has done well in training and boss Paulo Sousa seems to believe in him.

But he could be pipped by Mateusz Klich to a starting role after failing to shine in the most recent friendly, versus Iceland.
