CAMPAIGNERS invited people to speak out against an international trade agreement to “help protect the NHS”.

Activists from the 38 Degrees campaign group encouraged people to speak out against a European Parliament trade policy they say could threaten health services.

The campaigners gathered outside the Amnesty International bookshop in Sydney Street, Brighton, on Saturday and invited people to sign a petition.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership would force the NHS into competition with American private healthcare providers, protesters say.

The members of 38 Degrees asked people to get in touch with MEPs to ask them to oppose the trade deal.

David Babbs, executive director at 38 Degrees, said: “One of the most worrying things about this deal is that it is being agreed behind closed doors – so 38 degrees members are taking to streets to force it into the spotlight.

“People in the South East stood with thousands of people across the county to say we love our NHS too much to let it be sold off to the highest bidder.

“It is time for MEPs to answer our concerns and explain exactly what they are going to do to stop this.”
