Fewer than half of people living in flats in Brighton own a car or van according to a new study.

Latest data from the 2021 census found that 45 per cent of households living in flats or apartments in the city owned a car or van.

The statistics placed the city as lowest proportion in all of Sussex, with other local authorities having at least 50 per cent of flats owning a car or van.

Brighton was also the only authority below the national average in the UK which came in at 49 per cent.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 27,367 flats in Brighton owned a car or van out of the 60,754 apartments in the city.

The statistics for the city place Brighton and Hove below the national average, while other authorities in Sussex place higher in the list.

In Sussex, Horsham had the highest percentage of flats owning at least one car at 69.9 per cent.

Other authorities that rank highly include Mid Sussex, Wealden and Chichester.
