A man who died after driving his car the wrong way down the M6 was from Brighton, police have said.

Three other people also died in the accident which happened at just before 6am yesterday.

The 27-year-old was driving alone in a silver Ford Fusion on the M6 southbound near Walsall when he collided with a car coming the opposite way.

Three men from London in the second car, a silver Peugeot 406, were killed.

Two were 27 and the third was 18.

A 23-year-old passenger, also from London, survived and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

All four were confirmed dead at the scene, near to the M5 interchange.

None have yet been named.

Traffic was diverted from the scene of the collision for more than seven hours yesterday as the road was closed between junctions eight and seven.

Police said the Ford Fusion was travelling along the motorway in the wrong direction when the crash happened.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "One of the cars was travelling northbound on the southbound carriageway.

“We don't know how it happened, it is subject to a police investigation."

He said motorists were alerted to the crash with electronic signs and diverted onto the M5 motorway.

Ch Insp Baljeet Sidhu, from the Central Motorway Police Group, said: "This is a horrific collision which most tragically involved four fatalities.

"We would urge anyone with information travelling on that stretch of motorway at the time to come forward. They may hold vital information to assist with the inquiry."
