Telecom giant Vodafone has chosen a site on Upper Hollingdean Road, opposite Hollingbury Road and close to Downs Infant School, for a mobile phone base station and accompanying 12.5 metre high mast.

Tyco Electronics, who will carry out the building work, is planning to submit a proposal to Brighton and Hove City Council this month.

“We hope that parents will express their opposition to this mast,” said Preston Park councillor Kevin Allen.

Councillors, including Mr Allen, have sent letters to residents asking for views and any concerns about the station and mast, which are used by providers to boost phone signals.

The health risks associated with living near mobile phone masts are still largely unknown, as are the risks involved with carrying and using the handsets themselves.

Earlier in the year a similar application for a mast in Islingword Road in Hanover, was withdrawn at the last minute by Vodafone and O2.
