Rival groups set to bring city to standstill during protests

Rival groups are set to bring a city to a standstill as residents celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

A protest by anti-arms campaigners Smash EDO during the Queen’s jubilee holiday is being staged in “the worst place” for city centre traders and tourists.

Last night it emerged that up to 25 members of a rival right-wing nationalist group could attend the march.

It is claimed that EDL members will join the march on June 4, sparking fears about potential clashes.

The group is already heading to the city April 22 as part of their March for England. Smash EDO has issue an appeal for members to hold a counter demonstration at that event.

The anti-arms campaigners revealed plans to demonstrate in North Street, Brighton, on June 4 – the third day of a four-day public holiday – against a possible war with Iran.

Critics say the choice of location undermines the group’s claim that it does not want to disrupt people’s enjoyment of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Smash EDO is campaigning to close the EDO factory in Home Farm Road, Brighton, which it claims makes arms used in illegal military action overseas.

They are not rival groups! Rival: Definition: One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
They are opposing groups.

'bring brighton to a standstill' hardly. neither group has enough support, not to mention organisation to do much more than clog up north street for a couple of hours, until the march for england lot get thirsty and the smash edo lot forget what they were there for and drift off to browse the shelves in inifinity foods. the onyl people actually bringing brighton to a standstill will be the massed ranks of the police, kettling everyone in sight.

Here's an idea: on the day, identify them, round them up, put them in a field and let the little wastes-of-space fight each other to the death Battle Royale-style. Then the rest of the people in the town can enjoy the day and what it has to offer without these unwashed oiks making a nusiance of themselves to all-and-sundry. Thank you.

I agree. I have yet to see the print version but it appears the claims are clearly based on an anonymous posting on a previous related article's comments page.

If the Argus are now generating news based on unsubstantiated claims from unverified sources on their discussion board they have broken through the bottom of the barrel.

Since the Argus picks its stories from this comments list.

Heres some ideas for tomorrows headlines-

According to Tories, the violent deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians with Brighton made bomb components are of less importance than Brighton bank holiday business takings.

Tory Councillor uses fictional jubilee celebration threat to attack anti-arms trade group- and neglects to mention he works for an arms company himself.

This arms company Thales Simulation and Training Ltd, Crawley has direct contracts with international human rights abusing governments, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Indonesia.

Ex-Sussex police chief who was involved in failed corrupt attempt to get Smash EDO injuncted by the High Court in 2005, is now a Tory Councillor and uses his new position to attack campaigners.

Interests of an arms company with serial history of support for fascism are given priority for police support over the freedom to protest.

Any Israeli attack on Iran using F-16 and F-15 aircraft would almost certainly use EDO MBM made arming units, bunker buster bomb components, and aircraft bomb racks.

EDO MBM is manufacturing parts for the F-35 stealth fighter weapons system bound for Israel, against UK government obligations under EU and international law.

EDO MBM parts are used in Predator drones for illegal CIA extra-judicial assassinations.

As Admin of Arun EDL I would like to categorically state that there are no official plans to counter "Smash EDO" Demo.
The EDL counter left wing groups usually when they go against us on one of our demos. Our principal aim is to fight Militant Islam not a bunch of crusty soap dodgers. While I am on here I would also like to say that there is no official EDL presence on MfE St Georges Day march this year. It has been explained many times before but ANYONE can claim to be a member of the EDL.
I believe that Ben Parsons has been engaging in stirring up trouble rather than accurate reporting. This may have something to do with his political beliefs rather than an accurate story.

"You've written a letter to the Argus outlining your views on abortion - fine.

What people who share your views don't have the right to do is harrass vulnerable women, of whose circumstances you know nothing, nor workers going about their lawful business."

Are you against the harrassment and intimidation of workers going about their lawful business, as your comment suggests or not? You condemn the anti abortionists for using this tactic but support SmashEdo when they use the same tactic. You constantly bang on about people having the right to protest but are you not a member of UAF, a group with a policy of stopping people from exercising their democratic right to protest?
You say Zarfus post is nice, in what way is it nice? it contains an unsubstantiated claim that the attempt to bring an injunction against SmashEdo was "corrupt", it also makes the unsubstantiated claim that the CIA is carrying out illegal extra judicial assasinations, yet again Zarfu repeats the SmashEdo propaganda about illegal shipments of arms to Israel and this is what you call a nice post, no evidence just over emotive language and unsubstantiated claims.
Here are some facts Zarfu,
when Smash Edo broke into the factory you found no evidence whatsoever to back up your claims of illegal arms shipments.
In the resulting trial you failed to prove that this was happening but one of your members did threaten to murder the manager of Edo and his children.
At one of your members request, the Information Commissioner looked at all the available evidence in relation to your claim about illegal shipments to Israel and..... he found that claim to be without any factual basis.
If you have the evidence take Edo to court, if not well time to give it a rest. You wont though because you have invested so much time in this campaign that you have become incapable of accepting that you might just be wrong. It has become almost a religion for you and just like all religious people you save your greatest ire for disbelievers because they threaten your whole belief system.
Looking at the pictures from Bosnia and Serbia that were shown in some of the magazines last Sunday reminded me yet again that at times military intervention is the right thing to do. You may be happy to sit back and see 8000 muslims murdered in a genocidal campaign, because armed intervention goes against your beliefs, I wouldnt be. The world is a lot more complicated than your simplistic world view allows for.

Off you go again JHunty. Nice to see you've now modified your claim about the threats so it's ever-so-slightly nearer the truth (but a way to go yet).

And you still haven't given any evidence of harassment and intimidation since as you well know the courts found there was none.

And the courts found that it was not unlawful to smash the factory up during the Gaza massacre .

So you can carry on making the same old unsubstantiated claims and the same counter claims will be thrown back at you.

Given who you are and as you seem to know so much it would be a simple matter for you to provide some real evidence if there were any but there isn't is there?

And as for being "incapable of accepting we might just be wrong" well that could equally be thrown back at you since you seem so self-assured in your own beliefs.

Err...Not quite... Constables are Crown servants who uphold "Lex Terrae" or Law of the Land aka The Common Law(all the same thing) and who are entrusted with "Keeping the Queens Peace". A Constable has a Lawful duty to deal with a breach of the peace rather than a legal one. This Apparently trivial point is far more serious than it appears, many people have no understanding that there is a difference between "Lawful" (Common Law) and "legal" (statutes) and do not realise that statutes are subordinate to The Common Law.

Even someone from the EDL - who sounded like they actually were from the EDL - has pointed out how ridiculous the idea of EDL joining with SmashEDO is. Just do a tiny bit of research and you'd see that.

Let me switch it around and ask how you can know or even suspect this was from a genuine EDL supporter as opposed to someone who just called himself one to do a bit of stirring?

There is no point in engaging with Smash EDO. The clue is in the name, they are leftist extremists who seek to impose their views by mob violence - to smash. Stalin would have been proud of them. In their eyes the end justifies the means and if that means terrorising people so much the better. They de-humanise their opponents in the same way that Stalinists always have done. It means they can do whatever they like according to their own twisted logic. What is truly disgraceful is that the fellow travellers in the Green Politburo are seeking to put local people out of work. The good thing is that English workers are better than SmashEdo - they will not give in to this pathetic bunch of weekend revolutionaries.

The type of thinking that was part and parcel of Stalinist Russia or Chinas' worst excesses during the 'Cultural Revolution'

Yep agreed. The headline that they said the protest is their 'Moral Duty' just shows the arrogance of SmashEDO. This self important term sums up their attitude of 'We're right and EVERYONE ELSE is wrong!'

But if protesters didn't think they were morally right why would they bother? I'm guessing you can't make the same claim about your beliefs.

It seems to me that you are hardly a shining example of someone who is open to the possibility that you might be wrong. In fact you are always expressing your opinion on behalf of others. And by others you seem to mean everyone.

There's always one isn't there Bob Day;)

Actually not every protest is as a result of a self righteous moral conviction uber alles.

And what differentiates these two groups from other, less self righteous groups, is a claim to be the holders of some esoteric truth denied to the rest of us, and their conviction that the fate of the world as we know it rests on their shoulders.

Neither claim of course holds anymore water than a sieve would of course.

The global manufacturing of, nor the trading in arms will cease because some individuals chain themselves to a fence along some backwater road.

Nor will parading up and down screeching about Militant Islam alter the fact that the EDL is actually targetting Muslims rather than a, relatively speaking, minor political faction.

So here we have another thing they share. The preference for soft easy targets that will not require too much thought, foresight or planning ;)

AmboGuy you're so sweet. Did you miss me?

We don't all spend our lives glued to the Argus comments board as I've said before. You'll just have to learn to deal with my little absences.

That said I really do spend more time here than I should do. But as the comment board is now the Argus's front page news source I might just have to re-evaluate that (only joking - life's too short).

Or is it just that someone else might see through you and dare criticise? Maybe you think I'm pperrin since he seems well aware of your ways of dealing with argument too!

Anyway nice day and things to do so please don't fret if I'm away for too long.

Bob Day and gaz scott are clearly one and the same and how ridiculous that someone should feel the need to post with a different name in what I assume is an attempt to garner support.

I don't like anyone using the word 'retard' in a derogatory manner. My wife will confirm I have been a complete retard for many years now and do not see why it should be used as an insult anymore. After many years of sitting the wrong way around on the toilet and attending football matches I feel confident to lick whoevers windows I choose, and I'll be voting Green next time as well.

I was considering organising a march to express various self-important, moronic, and extreme views but there is such a long waiting list for Brighton.

I need to get back to bottom-burping into peanut packs before they're sealed. Then I might do some town planning.

We support SmashEDO and, on the whole, many of them support us. I don't know why people struggle with this concept and why people accuse me of hypopcrisy. We have marched before with SmashEDO and once we put them straight on the lies that get said about us we were very well received.

Nice to see the EDL have finally seen the error of their ways and come over from the dark-side.

We always knew they were closet "reds" and would finally be persuaded by the strength of our arguments. No Surrender eh boys!

There's no 'coming over to the dark side'. As I have said on numerous occasions EDL have joined SmashEDO marches in the past. We are not against you but we are not 'becoming part of you' either. I think you should look at the Facebook group page of the organisation you claim to represent ( for Mighty Brighton Infidels on Facebook) and you'll see how the local EDL feel about this dodgy article. You'll see why you're only fooling yourself and a silly journalist as I'm pretty sure everyone else sees through you.

Why exactly are you trying to ratchet up tension and cause more disruption?

As as a long term member of EDL I can say that we have marched ALONGSIDE SmashEDO in the past and will continue to come together in the future. I don't know why this Gaz Scott has a problem with this. I have worn my EDL tshirt on previous SmashEDO marches and have never had any problems with this. As Dave (EDL Supporter) has already said we actually get on very well with SmashEDO and so I don't think that one person will deter us from continuing to march alongside our SmashEDO brothers and sisters.

Whatever. No surrender, blah blah blah...

I think naive journo Ben Parsons should have realised by now how much any small amount of credibility he might have had has been damaged by this ridiculous article and its dodgy source.

I think you'd both benefit from reading up a bit more on the fundamental differences between left-wing and right-wing politics.

I don't think that we're 'strange bedfellows'. Having talked to SmashEDO marchers on a previous protest we actually have a lot in common. I thought this thread had died and I have got better things to do (it's called a life) than trawl these pages all day every day. Should I have waited for Bladesboy to officially close it as he often feels compelled to do?

You can interpret "silence" how you like but was I supposed to respond to a question/point and didn't? As it is I've responded to this bogus EDL poster many times but he can't seem to articulate his politics so all a bit futile really. You do seem to be pushing this Ambo. I wonder why? Wink wink.
