Niki Maenpaa has revealed how boss Chris Hughton encouraged him to stay with Albion.

The Finland international goalkeeper has signed for another year, despite spending last season on the bench.

Maenpaa, 31, is still waiting to make his Championship debut and there was some doubt as to whether he would accept the offer of a new contract.

But he says encouragement from Hughton and the club’s directors helped make up his mind.

The former VVV-Venlo goalkeeper remains determined to play in the Premier League after making his name in Holland’s Eredivisie.

Maenpaa said: “I’m really happy that I’ve signed a new contract as I wanted to stay. I had a really good feeling about Brighton. Not only from the manager, but the board also gave me the feeling that they really wanted me to stay, whether we were going to play in the Premier League or the Championship.

“I had a really good year, not only with Ben (Roberts, goalkeeping coach), but with the keepers too.”

Maenpaa was brought in as a serious challenger to David Stockdale last summer.

Although he was limited to three cup ties, his presence was seen by many as a reason behind Stockdale’s excellent form last term.

Now Maenpaa is ready to resume his challenge for the starting berth.

He said: “Next season is a new challenge for all of us. Stocko did really well last year, but it’s a new season and I just need to do my job well.

“Even though I haven’t played many games, I have learned a lot.

“I am 31 now and I still feel fit and really motivated. I feel I have many years to go and my dream has always been to play in the Premier League.”
