Adam Virgo has joined Dean Cox on the not wanted list at Albion.

Virgo was told by manager Gus Poyet yesterday that he will not be awarded a new contract.

It heralds the end of the 27-year-old former Celtic defender’s second stint at the club.

Virgo is the second of Albion’s 14 out of contract players to find out they are not being retained after fellow home-grown product Cox suffered the same fate a week ago.

His hopes of a new deal were damaged by his second red card of the season in the draw at Leeds in February.

Virgo lost both the captaincy and his place in the team when Poyet took charge in November but worked his way back into the Uruguayan’s first team plans in his preferred position at centre half.

Since that dismissal at Elland Road, Tommy Elphick and Adam El-Abd have been regular partners at the heart of the defence.

Virgo has made 121 league starts for Albion in his two spells, from 2000-2005 and 2008 to his last full game in the 1-1 draw at Gillingham earlier this month.
