Gus Poyet has urged Albion to show they are a class above Gillingham in Tuesday's first night match at The Amex in the Carling Cup.
Poyet wants the Seagulls to build on the momentum of Saturday's dramatic opening victory in the Championship against Doncaster.
He said: "It's going to be different. It's a cup game, it's against a League Two club and we need to respect them but at the same time show the difference. I'm not afraid of saying we should be better than them, so we need to prove it on the pitch.
"If we don't do the basics we can lose but it's up to us with all respect to Gillingham. I am looking forward to the team getting stronger and stronger at home, which is important for us.
"Gillingham have nothing to lose. They are playing in a great place, trying to be the first team to beat us at home. I think it's an absolutely great game for them. We have to be ourselves, control the game and try to be clinical to win it."
