Albion are poised to add at least one new player to their squad and possibly two – but they won’t be breaking the bank again.

Boss Gus Poyet expects to complete one or two deals before the transfer window shuts at 11 o’clock tonight, including an “impact signing”.

He hopes to wrap his business up well before the late finish to the buying and selling frenzy.

Poyet told The Argus: “I think we are going to do one player for sure, possibly two.

“The situation is different with the two players. One is somebody we have been following for a while.

“It is quite difficult, because there is a transfer involved and negotiations.

“The other one could be an impact signing which is going to be very nice for the football club.”

Poyet has made no secret of his wish for another striker but there will be no repeat of the £2.5 million fee splashed out on Craig Mackail-Smith.

He said: “We don’t have practically any money left in the budget to buy. There is a possibility we can negotiate some conditions but it’s not an easy one.”

Another player, midfielder Jamie Smith, could be on his way out in the near future. He was given a six-month contract but has not featured in the first team squad so far this season and has been training with the development group.

Poyet said: “Jamie’s situation is not easy, so we need to resolve it between him, me and the club.”

Members of the development squad could eventually be loaned out to gain more experience.

Poyet added: “I think there will be options for a few players to go out on loan, which means we will probably wait until the loan window opens.

“We might, if we are lucky, be able to send two to the same club.

“There are a few clubs that have enquired about the availability of players but no names in particular.”
