Albion chief Gus Poyet has branded Manchester United defender Patrice Evra a cry baby over his racism row with Luis Suarez.

Poyet does not believe fellow Uruguayan Suarez is racist and is sad the Liverpool striker has been put in the dock by the Football Association.

The FA have charged Suarez with racially abusing Evra during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Anfield last month.

The Argus revealed in September that Poyet has acted as a mentor to Suarez since his move to Liverpool from Dutch giants Ajax.

They have been in contact by phone and chatted when Suarez helped Liverpool to victory in the Carling Cup against Albion at The Amex.

Poyet said: “I believe Luis Suarez, it’s simple.

“I’m surprised, in a really sad way, that he’s been charged.

“I think it’s worse to charge someone because you trust one person when you have no proof.

“I’m really sad because it’s going to become too easy. I can make a complaint about any opposition manager, and if I take it as far as I can he’s going to get charged. Why are we going to take one person’s word over another one’s? It’s too risky now.

“I played football for seven years in Spain and was called everything, because I was from South America, and I never went out crying like a baby, like Patrice Evra, saying that someone said something to me.

“He should be a little bit stronger than that.”

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has provoked a storm by denying in an interview before the Suarez charge was announced that there is a problem with on-field racism in football.

Police are still investigating allegations that Chelsea and England captain John Terry racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand during a recent Premier League match at Loftus Road.
