Gordon Greer admits Albion must fill a massive midfield void when they look to close 2011 with a win.

But the skipper is confident his side can end their most momentous year for decades with three points at Coventry on Saturday.

Albion will be without suspended Liam Bridcutt for the trip to the Ricoh Arena, the last fixture of a calendar year which saw them win League One and move into their new home.

Centre-back Greer is well placed to appreciate the contribution ever-present Bridcutt has made at the base of midfield.

He said: “For me, playing directly in touch with Liam, I think he is a great player “Ever since he has been at the club he has been one of the stand-out performers, week in and week out, so it’s a massive miss for us.

“He has got a massive future in the game. He helps the defence out, works very hard in midfield and keeps the ball ticking over.

“But it’s an opportunity for someone else to come in and do the business. It’s up to someone else now.”

Greer is convinced Albion will shrug off the disappointment of their 3-0 defeat at Reading and treat their travelling supporters to a New Year’s Eve win over the Sky Blues.

He added: “Reading’s a tough place to go and I thought we played quite well.

“These things happen. Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.

“We’re obviously gutted we lost the game but we are looking forward.

“There is a game on Saturday so we need to focus on that.

“The fans have been brilliant. They keep us going.

“Against Burnley it was the best I’ve ever played in front of and they cheered us on at Reading, even when we were 2-0 down.”

Coventry have a couple of selection decisions to make after beating Bristol City 1-0 in the absence of striker Clive Platt, who had a virus.

Southampton host Bristol City tomorrow. Saints stars Morgan Schneiderlin, Jose Fonte, Steve De Ridder and Jack Cork are all one booking away from missing Monday’s trip to The Amex.
