Gus Poyet will field his best available side at Wrexham as Albion chase a £500,000 FA Cup bonus.

The manager is poised to name a starting line-up similar to the one he selected for Saturday’s home victory over Bristol City in the Championship for the third round replay against the Conference leaders.

A squad of 20 trained at Lilleshall yesterday en route to North Wales. Their tie was postponed at 9.30am today due to heavy overnight frost and has been pushed back to 7.15pm tomorrow.

The Seagulls will be significantly stronger for the replay than they were for the 1-1 draw with Wrexham at The Amex ten days ago.

Lewis Dunk and Adam El-Abd have returned to bolster the defence since then. Craig Mackail-Smith and Liam Bridcutt were rested for the first meeting against the Welshmen and, although Mackail-Smith may not be risked after suffering a nasty eye injury against Bristol, Bridcutt could feature this time.

Will Hoskins, Mackail-Smith’s first-half replacement on Saturday, is also available for selection after coming through his comeback from a knee injury with minor niggles and blisters. The only confirmed fresh addition to the casualty list is Jake Forster-Caskey, who misses out with a thigh problem.

Poyet said: “There are a few knocks so it is going to be a late call. We will try to play the best team available. He will not withold anyone but, at the same time, we are not going to take any risks so if we think somebody can have a little bit of a rest we won’t chance them. If everybody is available it is going to be very similar to the other day.”

The stakes are high in front of a sell-out 9,000 crowd at the Racecourse Ground, with Newcastle awaiting the winners in an ESPN televised home tie on Saturday week (5.15pm).

Victory would be worth about £500,000 to the Seagulls in prize money combined with TV funds and their 45% share of an Amex sell-out against Newcastle, although Poyet says that would not affect his spending power in the January transfer window.

He added: “Newcastle doesn’t change my mind. Last year we went to Woking and FC United to win. One went to penalties and the other we won comfortably.

“This is a similar situation. You could say it’s not your priority but this is a great cup competition. We are in it and we could play Newcastle at home, which would be great for the fans, so we are going to do everything possible to win the game.”

Wrexham, the only non-league club left in the competition, now have an extra day of recovery for top scorer Jake Speight (hamstring). His place up front could be taken by the fit-again Danny Wright.

The Welshmen have no frost-protection covers and arranged the early inspection today due to concerns about the overnight weather having an effect on an area of the pitch in front of the main stand, which is shielded from sunlight.
