Vicente poised for start against Rams

Vicente started against Blackpool Vicente started against Blackpool

Vicente is poised for consecutive starts for Albion for the first time since October.

The Spanish playmaker was in the team for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Blackpool.

His corner set up Joe Mattock’s early goal and he was the Seagulls’ main attacking threat until substituted after Gonzalo Jara Reyes saw red to preserve energy for tomorrow night’s home game against Derby County.

Manager Gus Poyet said: “He was our most influential player. Everything we created was because of him. It was very unlucky that we couldn’t keep 11 on the pitch to keep him on for longer, but I’m sure he is going to recover and let’s see if we can use him again on Tuesday.

“I thought about not playing him, but now I have got him fit enough to play a longer part I will try to play him as much as I can, rather than waiting for something else to happen.”

Vicente’s only previous starts for Albion were against Ipswich and Hull in October. He returned from a punishing fitness regime to score both goals as a substitute in the last home game against Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, Albion expect to extend Gai Assulin’s loan deal from Manchester City today for the rest of the season.

A slight groin injury ruled the 20-year-old Israeli out of the squad at Blackpool. Poyet said: “It was just a precaution. We had an extra man (17 in the squad) and he was not 100 per cent fit.”

I still dont think Gus knows his best 11, the two lads from City look quality, Bridcutt is not the player in this new role. I suppose Gus has so many good players picking a side is not easy!

A 'best 11' is such a 1970s concept, there is no such thing any more. The game has moved on and you pick whichever 11+5 you think has got the best chance of getting the result you want in a specific match. The opposition line-up, both physique and style, are mightily important when choosing your own side.

We need something a bit special as the play offs are slipping away from us

Shucks - having to agree with MBTS again!!

Bridcutt is best suited to the "Quarterback" position - he was awesome there, mopping up in front of the back four. He is less effective further up the pitch and his form has dipped in the new role.

My prefefence would be to see LB back in his old position tomorrow, with perhaps Razak restored to midfield and Vincente ahead of them with two wingers and Macca up front

agreed.. I still think we lack bite in the centre, Bridcutt is not the power we need, I would love to see the city boys with Vicente and Bridcutt back in his holding spot. As for the play offs, there is a million miles to go.. results are not a certainty for anyone.

I know everyone is longing to see Vicente, Razak, LuaLua, Assulin, Noone, Buckley, Bridcutt and Forster-Caskey all in the same starting 11 (OK, I realise it is a slight exaggeration), but I think it would be a disaster..

I'm all for attacking line-ups, but with all of them involved, I feel we would be overrun and/or caught on the break.

As annoying as it is – for some people – to see Navs, Barnes and possibly Dicker when he comes back, they serve a (very important) purpose.

However, a Greer-Vicente-CMS spine of the team, with a fresh winger in each half terrorising the left/right back would be immense.

I agree with your thinking Dr B.
Disappointed with the result on Saturday but feel the Albion are most effective when Vicente plays if we have a better balanced midfield which your suggested line up would imo provide.
When we had that poor run in the autumn it seemed that our problems emanated from the full backs. Having strengthened the team there we seem to be playing more compactly which has seen more support for the midfield by the full backs and more support for the strikers from the midfield. The team has benefitted as a result which is well illustrated by Barnes's form and our 'attacking' stats. Even on Saturday we had 8 shots with 6 on target which is significantly better than those in October.
My only question Dr B is where does Barnes play if your formation is adopted ?

Good question Ballantrrae!

I've been supporting Ash on here lately, but wonder whether a berth on the bench may be in order tomorrow so that we can really use the width of that big Amex pitch (I'd like to see WB and Lua on each wing). I think I'd go with Ash to replace CMS around the 60 min mark depending on form and events in the game of course.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record the case for putting Bridcutt back where he belongs is now overwhelming. Has been a shadow of his former self since being moved. Do think that 2 wingers is a luxury we can't afford and was very surprised to see all 3 in the matchday squad on saturday. Midfield never got a hold of the game saturday and we had no options on the bench to change it.

Was that before or after the sending off.Surely that changed the whole balance of the wa Gus wants the team to play.

Have to agree with all the above, it is all about working out the best options now. If we have been setting up to play cautiously and it has got us to where we have got, then it’s a good job done.

If Gus is more serious about the Prem than we are led to believe, caution may scrape us there but this also means playing with fear and could cost us.

However if promotion is too soon for us, which it probably is, there is no reason why we can’t throw caution to the wind, mix it up a bit and accidently end up in the playoffs.

The first bit of constructive bravery I would suggest is not having a GK on the bench. Blackpool didn’t have one. This could be opened up for JFK, Toby or whoever just to add an extra option.

We are good in parts but I'm still looking forward to see the team play as a whole unit for 90 mins, I just hope this starts tomorrow.

I totally agree with Hovite re two goalkeepers in squad. We've not needed a goalkeeper on bench all season so for the sake of the odd time a back up is needed it's a waste. Other teams don't have 2 goalies in their squad.

The only reason I can think of Gus has two is to put pressure on the playing goalkeeper to perform

And if Brez gets sent off or injured, what out-field player would you like to see in goal?

pte says...
4:48pm Mon 19 Mar 12

You play the odds. Over a season it might only happen once or twice and at very worse you lose 3-6 points. But you make up for it over a season with increased options from the bench. So far I don't think we've actually needed an extra goalie. It happened to West Ham recently and they hung on for a win.

Having only one goalie is a calculated risk. Sod's law if we try it now the goalie will get sent off in the next match. It should have been tried earlier in the season to increase the odds in our favour over a season

Hovite says...
4:55pm Mon 19 Mar 12

Barnes was a GK before he became an outfield player. Chuck him in goal if something happened. It wouldnt happen twice in the last 9 games and probably wouldn't even happen once in a whole season anyway.

Can you IMAGINE the amount of stick Barnes would get if he let in a goal or two?

I think these pages would *literally* go into meltdown.

I think the thing to remember is that a very small percentage of teams opt to leave a second keeper out of the matchday squad. To me, that says it's a risk that just isn't worth taking.

Hovite says...
5:47pm Mon 19 Mar 12

I don't think any player who is not a GK would get any stick for letting in goals in an emergency.

Anyway I think that 6 of the teams above us have not had a GK on the bench recently.

The odds of losing a GK are very slim whereas 5 outfield players on the bench gives you 20% more options.

Is this still not a risk worth taking?

SicklySeagull says...

It would be appreciated if the team could be named earlier in the day which would avoid the disappointment of arriving at the stadium to find our two loan players and LuaLua are not in the starting line up.

Technically it gives you 25% more options ;-) But the odds of losing a keeper are not that small when you consider how many penalties keepers give away - certainly (IMHO) not small enough to risk not having one on the bench.

4everalbion, the 6 teams above us who do not use a GK sub are also doing pretty well so far.

I didn’t think I was being controversial by throwing this thought into cyberspace.

I believe that Ashley Barnes had some experience there so that could be a possibility. Substitute goalkeeper is a difficult one when you have only five to choose from.

Perhaps you would also appreciate having an input in team selection as well?

Personally, I like to arrive a the ground full of anticipation and enthusiasm, pick up the team news from an in-stadium info source, deliberate over the news as kick-off advances and then cheer on the lads (whoever the individual 11+5 are) and then go home somewhere between ecstatic and content dependent on the outcome, safe in the knowledge that I am continuing to witness the evolution of a fantastic new era at the club.

Still, each to their own, Sickly, each to their own.

I am unable to see much of my favourite team, whilst living in Spain, but I think it would be a good idea to have a GOALKEEPER between the sticks, as many comments state this is a major weakness, and not worry about one on the bench.
