No easing up now for Agdestein

More to come: Torbjorn Agdestein in action at Peterborough last season More to come: Torbjorn Agdestein in action at Peterborough last season

Torbjorn Agdestein has been urged to seize his chance of Championship action.

The Norwegian striker, 20, has impressed in Albion’s first two pre-season friendlies and scored at Lewes on Tuesday.

Gus Poyet has promoted Agdestein from the development squad and wants him to push for first team action.

But the Seagulls boss warned: “I’m promising nothing because if I tell you now he is a first team player and next week he doesn’t touch the ball, he doesn’t make any decisions, he doesn’t go past people, he doesn’t score, then he is going to go down (to the development squad).

“The thing is right now he is with us in the first team squad.

“The opportunity is there to stay with us. He knows that.

“It is the same with Anton Rodgers, the same with Ben Sampayo.

“They need to take the chance and keep it, not take it and then relax and give it away.”

Albion send teams to Dorchester tomorrow and Hastings on Saturday.

Tickets for the Seagulls’ home date against Chelsea on Saturday, August 4, are now on general sale.

I've always been impressed by this fella when I've seen him play. I genuinely hope he steps up to the plate this season and makes a starting berth his own. Over to you Toby.

Interestingly Gus seems to be saying that Rodgers and Sampayo have been promoted (for now) to the first team squad too. Good luck to all three mentioned in the article.

Has anyone seen Rodgers play for the DS? Is he potentially a holding midfielder as I seem to remember him getting quite forward in his first team appearance vs Wrexham....is he flexible?

I've liked what I have seen of him too.

Hopefully get to see a bit more of Anton Rodgers, as he has looked good at Maidstone.

I thought both Sampayo and Rodgers looked assured against Lewes(!) especially Rodgers who looked very composed on the ball.

And what would have happed to JFC if he had stayed? Surely he would have had an opportunity to grab a 1st team place, wouldn't he? Was it a case of the right place but the wrong time...? Funny old game, this footie. Nevertheless good luck to Toby and Anton. I think they will both grab the chance.

I think the point about JFC is that he's got the chance of regular first team football, which he wouldn't be guaranteed with us at this point, until he returns to us in January. He should have developed much more in that time than he would have done sitting on our bench and getting the occassional 20 minutes on the pitch as a sub.

JFC will benefit greatly from his loan spell at Oxford. The side play a similar style of football to the Albion, and regular first team play with them will give the player that extra bit of development needed to kick-start his first team appearances at the Amex.
Gus sees this loan spell as the best way forward for both club and player, and who can argue with the method, after so much talent has been created out of similar scenarios with ambitious clubs over the years.

Likewise i've been impressed watching Agdestein play and look forward to him progressing in the first team.

As for Rogers and sampayo, i do think they'll find it differcult to make the first team (especially if there are more signings) this coming season. They're time will come though!

As for JFC, i thought it was amazing how a 17 year old came on that pitch and took his chance last season. So i was a bit surprised he was loaned out initially, but on reflection it will be for the best. It's only until Jan and after seeing how well Oxford did last year i think it will be great for him to be part of a promotion chasing team!

SEAGULLS!!!!!

If Anton can stay out of prison then I think he has a great future.

Meow!

The point about JFC is that he is younger than the others. So there is more time to develop him.

Still not entirely sure I understand the JFC loan. If you're good enough you're old enough and JFC certainly looked good enough last season. He won man of the match in his first two games in competition with 21 other, older, experienced Championship players. It doesn't follow that because he may spend a lot of time on the bench he should be loaned out - it's a squad game and when our first choice central midfielders are unavailable we'll need quality cover. JFC took his chance as the other lads are being urged to do, yet he still hasn't been allowed to step up. In Gus we trust, but it does seem a strange one.

Totally agree guys,i don`t think sending JFC to Oxford is a bad thing, ibelieve IMHO it is Gus`s way of setting him up for regular first team action.Gus has openly showed respect towards JFC,naming him as the one player he would miss when we had the 5 players on the bench rubbish.UTA

JFC needs regular games to develope. This is not going to happen over the next six months at the Albion. A choice of club, Oxford.

PS,Gus is no fool,he is well aware of the consequences of throwing a young talent likeJFC in the deep end.We have all seen strikers for instance go through lean spells, and it is soul destroying. To put a young player in the mix too soon could ruin a potential talent.A few months with a descent team as Oxford, will give him an opportunity to see both the good and the bad without making him bite off more than he can chew.PROUD to be aSEAGULL!

See we were bidding for a Uruguayan striker from Genoa but got outbid by Monaco. Certainly like the clubs we are being mentioned in the same breath as at the moment - a long way from Gillingham. Shame it didn't happen though. Haven't seen this mentioned once anywhere on the rumours sites/NSC so shows how good Gus is at keeping things under wraps. When we do announce a new signing, it'll come out of the blue it would seem.

Disappointed that we seem to have missed out on Sebastian Ribes. Looks as if there won't be any new signings this week...
It's a good thing that Agdestein is at least for now being considered by Poyet.
With Barnes being utilised more often than not in a midfield role we would be down to 2 strikers (CMS and Hoskins) were it not for Toby.
There is however a 'rumour' that we are interested in Andre Andre (?) a young Portugese midfielder.
It would be good to get some positive news not just the negative ones ie Hall to Spurs and not signing Ribes.

seagulltess says...

The player who for me is looking the part is Hoskins; he has not had the game time to show what he can do. For me I think he score can score more goals than Mackail Smith. Time will tell.

Gee Jay says...
3:24pm Thu 19 Jul 12

Glad to see Toby has put himself in contention.
Also, everyone appears to agree that Will Hoskins has the potential to hold a more regular place in the squad this season, and do what we all expected him to do last season.
Meanwhile Grayson at Huddersfield is buyng like he expects to get money back from a Jordan Rhodes sale. Whilst Neil Warnock has only been able to get his old pal Paddy Kenny in, and has players not wanting to sign extentions to contracts and wanting out.
Bates is still trying to finalise a deal to sell Leeds, and the fans want him to go ASAP.
We have a lot to be grateful for at Brighton, who would have thought we would have come this far from just a few months ago at windswept Withdean. Come on...who really thought we would be selling over 20,000 season tickets back then.
(Apart from Tony Bloom maybe)

fretlessbass says...
4:24pm Thu 19 Jul 12

Neither Adgestein or Hoskins made any impression last season. I don't expect that to change this season. Neither of them are up to scoring goals regularly at this level. Albion will need a proven Championship goal scorer to challenge this season.

Actually it was picked up by someone on NSC yesterday regarding a twitter conversation between Brian Owen of The Argus and a French(?) journo.

They don't miss a trick, those guys!!!

I take your point abou Gus being discreet with the serious targets though.
