Torbjorn Agdestein has been urged to seize his chance of Championship action.
The Norwegian striker, 20, has impressed in Albion’s first two pre-season friendlies and scored at Lewes on Tuesday.
Gus Poyet has promoted Agdestein from the development squad and wants him to push for first team action.
But the Seagulls boss warned: “I’m promising nothing because if I tell you now he is a first team player and next week he doesn’t touch the ball, he doesn’t make any decisions, he doesn’t go past people, he doesn’t score, then he is going to go down (to the development squad).
“The thing is right now he is with us in the first team squad.
“The opportunity is there to stay with us. He knows that.
“It is the same with Anton Rodgers, the same with Ben Sampayo.
“They need to take the chance and keep it, not take it and then relax and give it away.”
Albion send teams to Dorchester tomorrow and Hastings on Saturday.
Tickets for the Seagulls’ home date against Chelsea on Saturday, August 4, are now on general sale.
