Barnes vows to cut out "stupid" yellows
9:30am Thursday 27th September 2012 in Albion By Brian Owen
Ashley Barnes is booked at Watford
Ashley Barnes has admitted he needs to cut out the “stupid” bookings before they cost him a place in the Albion side.
The versatile attacking player is an option for the centre-forward berth against Birmingham City on Saturday after Craig Mackail-Smith suffered a hamstring injury.
Barnes, a key part of Gus Poyet ’s game plan, has scored three goals this season but also picked up four yellow cards.
Another against Blues would rule him out of Tuesday’s visit from Ipswich, when Mackail-Smith is likely to still be absent.
Barnes told The Argus: “I need to stay as long as possible not getting any more stupid bookings. I need to stop doing stupid things in stupid areas.
“Obviously I can foul in the right areas to take one for the team but I keep getting stupid bookings. I need to stop that.”
Barnes was booked after a fracas with Watford’s Daniel Pudil when he admitted that, figuratively at least, he “saw red” recently.
He was cautioned for fouls late on against Barnsley and Burnley when the games were won.
The Albion No.9 scored against Birmingham at The Amex last season but said: “We feel like we have got a better squad now.
“We need to keep winning and see how far we can go on this run.”

In the next two games, he will be a target to get 'wound up' by the opposition, he needs to learn to walk away and let his football do the talking.
Birmingham and Ipswich will be coming with a game plan to disrupt and try to break our flow, and be happy with a point or delighted with a single goal 'sneak win'.

Gus appears to have great faith in Ashley, but sometimes his body language after he has been 'offended against' has been noticed by many fans (and probably referees). If he can control this side of his game, he will move another step forward as a player.

I think Birmingham see themselves as a good team that needs a little luck to turn the corner. Their recent beating will spur them on but not sure it will help them win.
Could be another Wednesday type of game, two teams both trying to play attractive football but one a lot better at it than the other.
A clean game, 2-0 Brighton.

Just need Dunkie to see the bigger picture and calm himself down too and we'll have an even better centre back in the team. He's already an outstanding player but temperament, discipline or just plain old carelessness can cost up goals and points.

Any decent defender or target man that we might want will consider how many games they might play. If a club wants a player to go out on loan to get more experience Brighton is probably not the place to come to. A good defender looking at us as a loan destination has no chance of edging out anyone, unless injuries occur. The same could be said up front too but maybe slightly easier with the Barnes
yellow card issue.
A free agent purchase might be our only option, an older player looking to keep going but experienced enough to know that his starting place is not carved in stone.

Is it possible that the very thing we all delight in having, a very strong squad, is the stumbling block we can't get over when it comes to signing loan deals.

Suspect the gaffer has had a few words but good to see AB realising what is at stake if he doesn't sort his lack of discipline out. If we had the target man already Poyet would have had the potential option of selecting him to replace CMS.
Furthermore Poyet would be less likely to try to rush CMS back and might want to rest him (CMS) for the Derby game as well. With the International break coming up he would have plenty of recovery time.
The possibility of Barnes being suspended would also have been less of an issue.
Hosko's continued injury absence doesn't help.
Much the same logic could be applied to the CB situation where we are only an injury or suspension away from needing someone new on the bench.
The most important thing is that at least we have a good option as far as the Birmingham match is concerned. I am confident that Dobbie, assuming he is selected, will want to make the most of the opportunity. Unfortunately I think Birmingham will also want to demonstrate that the Barnsley result is not a true reflection of their ability.
Lets hope the Albion keep the momentum going.

A loan player will want to play, his club will want him to play, he and his club will think him good enough to play, but our squad is so good, he just might not play that often.
Most loan players go out on loan to gain experience or because they are good but their own club has better. Any loan player to Brighton will find it hard to get regular games.

Birmingham will have Marlon King, Nikola Zigic, Leroy Lita and Nathan Redmond available. That is a formidable quartet of strikers, and I guess they will try to utilise them fully by pushing high up the field. They have just signed experienced fullback Paul Robinson who by all accounts is a hatchet man. I fear that Will Buckley will get chopped down by this guy. Let's hope he avoids injury.
This promises to be a full-blooded and attacking/ counter-attacking contest - very exciting and absorbing, and possibly a bit brutal.
My heart says 3-1, but my realistic forecast is 2-2, a few sore shins and probably a number of bookings.

I think this game will be another test for the team but momentum counts and we have momentum.

No other team in our division has a stronger back four than ours and we have the best keeper. They might well try to press us high up the field but that should allow more pace in midfield and pressing high is very energy sapping.
I firmly believe that we will win by two goals.

Birmingham's defenders and midfielders will have been told their jobs are on the line... any players shirking will be severely dealt with.... and will therefore tackle, hassle and intimidate our players as far as they consider they can get away with it. They will have a game plan for sure. The key will be for Gus to have plans to nullify whatever system they employ and at the same time to impose our style of play on them, not allow them to play too high up the field, and to break quickly from defence to attack.

On reflection it could be a low scoring affair, and yes, I think we should be too strong for them, but we may struggle to put the ball in the net. Hopefully one or more of Dean Hammond/Andrew Crofts/Stephen Dobbie/Kazenga Lua Lua will open their account and either Ashley Barnes orWill Buckley will get on the scoresheet for a 3-0 victory.
We have goals in us everywhere as Greer, El-Abd, Bridge have demonstrated and Bruno will surely soon follow suit. Whatever the outcome it should be a good contest and a good test for the team without Macca.
Can't wait for Saturday.
