A BOMB squad returned to a town centre road for the third time in two days after a “suspicious substance” was found.

Emergency services remained at the scene in Tarring Road, Worthing during the afternoon today.

But the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal unit were called in this evening around 6.30pm to the same house after the discovery of a “suspicious substance”.

The road was also closed by Sussex Police as a precaution and will remain closed while EOD officers “carry out further assessment”.

A Sussex Police spokesman told The Argus: “Officers are in attendance at Tarring Road in Worthing following the discovery of a suspicious substance at the property.

“The road has been closed between Shakespeare Road and Heene Road as a precaution while explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers carry out further assessment.

“Police officers will remain at the scene while the assessment is completed and further communications will be released once the road can be reopened.”

A “suspicious package” was destroyed by explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers after police visited the address at around 9am on Wednesday, June 8. The bomb squad returned on Wednesday evening at around 9pm.

A 52-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and remains in custody.

It is unclear how long the road closure will remain in place.
