SUSSEX has seemingly become the new Hollywood as A-list stars have been spotted filming across the county.

Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, Bafta-nominated Timothy Spall and acting veteran Sir Michael Caine were all spotted this week as filming took place for several different productions.

Filming on the upcoming period comedy Wicked Little Letters has seen parts of Sussex transported back to the 1920s, with a range of food stands and posters from the era and deckchairs lining the street near Worthing Lido.

Timothy Spall was seen walking with a Twenties-era policeman along the town’s esplanade, while Olivia Colman was spotted in an outfit from the age while filming in Arundel.

Wicked Little Letters, set in Littlehampton, follows a group of women who set out to solve the mystery of who is writing a series of “scandalous and obscene” letters to people in the town.

The Italian Job star Sir Michael Caine was seen filming on the beach in Camber Sands for his new film The Great Escaper.

It is based on a true story and sees Sir Michael play Hove veteran Bernard Jordan as he escapes from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Production has also been taking place for the small screen in Sussex this week, with filming continuing for the ITV crime drama Grace, based on the novels by Brighton author Peter James.

Film crews were at a house near Hove Park, though the show’s stars John Simm and Richie Campbell were not seen.

It comes just weeks after YouTube star Jacksepticeye, real name Sean McLoughlin, described Brighton as a “mini LA” on a podcast.

In an episode of Trash Taste, the vlogger and gamer, who moved to the city from Ireland in 2017, said: “I had been thinking about moving already and I thought LA was a bit too far and you have to get visas. I thought maybe London, but it’s just a nightmare - the traffic is awful, there’s too many people and it’s too busy for someone who grew up in a tiny town.

“When I went to Brighton, I was like ‘this is lovely’ - it’s small, the beach is here and my friends are there.

“I was like ‘this is perfect, why would I live anywhere else?’.”
