Greggs lorry overturns on railway tracks at Bognor Regis

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and gas engineers are at the scene of the incident in Longford Road in Bognor.

The fire service said the Greggs lorry left the road, went through a fence and overturned.

The road is closed and trains are not running to and from Bognor.

Network Rail said no one has been injured.

People living in the area have been warned to keep their windows and doors closed.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We are currently at the scene of a road traffic collision at Longford Road, Bognor Regis.

“A lorry has left the road, going through a fence backing on to the railway. A gas main and BT line have also been damaged. The road is currently CLOSED. Please stay away from the area.

“If you live in the vicinity of Longford Road, please remain in your home and keep windows and doors closed.·

“Crews are working with gas engineers to isolate the gas before moving the vehicle. The area is likely to remain closed for several hours and there are currently no trains running from Bognor Regis.”

A Southern Rail spokesman said while the lorry is not blocking the tracks, it is blocking access to signalling equipment.

“Earlier this morning, a lorry crashed through a section of boundary fencing in the Bognor Regis area,” the spokesman said.

“Whilst it isn't blocking the tracks, it is in a precarious position on its side and is on top of and blocking access to signalling equipment.

 “A telegraph pole may have also been damaged which risks falling if the lorry is moved. Further to this, there is a suspected gas leak, which will need to be capped and made safe before they can move the lorry.

“Emergency services and specialist engineers are on site, working on a plan to get the lorry removed safely as soon as is possible.

“Trains are unable to run to and from Bognor Regis. Services will terminate and restart at either Chichester or Barnham instead.

“For journeys to/from Bognor Regis, we would strongly advise that you avoid travelling now, and travel later today once the line has reopened.”
