A section of the A27 will be closed on ten days next month as part of critical repair works to a bridge.

Parts of the main road surrounding the Patcham junction will see the eastbound carriageway closed for five nights. The westbound carriageway will then also be closed for five nights.

Diversion routes will be in place meaning that cars travelling on the A27 will either need to head along the A23.

Announcing the plans, a National Highways spokesman said: “Following on from our work on the western side of A27 Patcham Viaduct earlier this year, we’ll soon be returning to carrying out repairs and maintenance to the eastern side.

“This includes repairs to the bridge, replacing expansion joints, resurfacing and waterproofing. This work is critical to maintaining and improving safety.”

As part of the closure, the A27 eastbound will be closed at the Patcham Junction from Sunday, September 3 to Thursday, September 7 between 8pm and 5am.

A diversion will mean motorists will drive along the A23 northbound to Pyecombe before turning around and coming back down the road.

The westbound junction will then be closed from Sunday, September 10 to Thursday, September 14 from 8pm to 5am.

Cars will be diverted along London Road before turning onto Old Shoreham Road before turning onto the A293 and re-joining the A27 at the Shoreham Bypass.

National Highways also warned that lanes may be closed on the opposite carriageways during the closures.

A spokesman also added that “works are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances, such as unsuitable weather”.
