The Argus: Eliza Jaye

Eliza Jaye

From: Brighton via Australia

Influences: Billie Holiday, Patti Smith, AC/DC, The Doors and The Velvet Underground.

Profile: Last year saw Australian-born trained classical violinist Eliza Jaye’s debut single Black Heart Run get played by the likes of Steve Lamazq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music..

Now she’s preparing to follow up that initial support with her debut album, The Seed, which is set for release in October.

The singer-songwriter, who relocated from Sydney to Brighton in her early 20s, began her live music career as a nine-year-old when she busked around her home city to raise the airfare for a violin conference in Japan.

As a teenager she sang and played violin and cello for various bands, before teaching herself to play the guitar and developing a love for the blues after listening to Billie Holiday's Lady Sings The Blues album on repeat for a year.

She has now developed her own sound mixing influences from the 1960s and 1970s with 1990s grunge and rock.
