The Self Help Group

From: Brighton

Profile: Formed in 2009, Brighton’s Self Help Group released their debut album Not Waving, But Drowning on the Union Music label last week.

Drawing inspiration from the sound of 1970s Laurel Canyon – home to the likes of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills And Nash – the band also works in a love of folk and country to the mix backed by the vocals of sisters Clara Wood- Keeley and Sarah Natalie Wood, and songwriter Mark Bruce.

Each song on the album was inspired by unusual news stories they have found from across the world – ranging from a PoW stitching anti-Nazi messages into woven tapestries, to the drowning of a Michigan student while celebrating that Doomsday prophet Harold Camping had got it wrong.
